Emerging Economies

As economic progress takes place in the developing countries, their demand for foods and agricultural commodities grows, leading to a diversion of Brazilian exports from the traditional markets of the developed world to these countries like China, India, the neighboring Latin American countries and those in Asia. This resulted in a new research area of ICONE on emerging economies, seeking to gather information on the production systems, the structure of the markets and their political relations and the tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Besides this, the approximation of Brazilian negotiators in the Doha Round with those from other developing countries of the G-20 demanded a better understanding of the trade interests of these countries. Certain proposals made by the group may not serve the national interests of Brazil and, therefore, a better understanding of their contexts would allow for improvement of the negotiating proposals in order to meet their common interests.

Among the studies of our institute, the William and Flora Foundation has been the main project. This work created a research network of agriculture trade among institutes and researchers in Asia and Latin America. The countries include China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand in Asia, and Argentina, Brazil and Chile in Latin America. ICONE coordinates the activities of this project, the administrative part, and disseminates the information of the research carried out by this network called ‘Asia and Latin America Agri-Food Research Network’ (ALARN). Another project was “Building a Trade and Agriculture Research Network within South America: a step towards increasing South-South Cooperation" financed by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC). Besides identifying the main research centers in Latin America, this project also identified the main agricultural products exported within the continent and with their main trading partners in emerging economies, like China, India and Russia. This analysis resulted in the identification of areas of common interest within the Latin American countries. This project was carried out in 2007.
