Since 2004, ICONE began researching and analyzing topics that affect the international agricultural trade negotiations of the Doha Round and regional and bilateral agreements. The concerns with technical, sanitary and phytosanitary barriers, the debate on trade standards and the creation of principles and criteria for production, are topics discussed in the WTO, as well as other forums.
It is with the perception there is a wave of new areas that affect production and agricultural trade, that ICONE is beginning to get involved in certifications and private standards to trade, the Cartagena Protocol and convention on Biological Diversity, land-use, Brazilian agriculture modeling and relation to agriculture, trade and climate change.
In this context, the role of trade agreements and relations to other topics above indicate that the world will increasingly demand expertise and the strategic positioning of the stakeholders.
The figure below illustrates the relation between agriculture, trade and sustainability, with a focus on the concerns relating to climate change.
